About Meanwhile, Somewhere in Orbit…

This is a short work for prepared piano using John Cage’s preparations from his Sonatas and Interludes. Early in my studies at UCSB the pianist Patricia von Blumröder visited campus to play the complete Cage work and invited the graduate composition students to write pieces to serve as a sort of musical apertif. This was a super fun one, and someday I should probably write a couple other little movements to make a suite.
